AN ABERGAVENNY soldier spoke of his anticipation about getting home to his wife when his tour of Afghanistan finishes next month.

Sgt Adam Whitbread, 36, is serving as part of the 2nd Battalion, Royal Welsh, taking responsibility for security as they fight on the front line in Helmand.

Sgt Whitbread, on his eighth tour since joining the army in 1995, is a member of B (Rorke's Drift) Company and has to keep in touch with all of the company's soldiers at all times, using radio and satellite equipment bot from an operations room and inside a Warrior armoured vehicle.

He said: "It's my job to know where every group of soldiers is at any one time. I also help co-ordinate the various different groups when we are mounting a deliberate operation."

Another part of his duties are organising the Afghan interpreters who work alongside the soldiers.

Sgt Whitbread joined the army to follow in his father's footsteps and is the fourth generation of Welsh soldiers in his family, something he says he is very proud of.

He is married to Carole and is getting ready to see his loved ones and, as a motorcycle enthusiast, await delivery of a new Triumph Daytona 675R.

Sgt Whitbread added: "The tour has gone really well but I'm really looking forward to getting back and seeing my wife. I also can't wait to get out on the road on my new motorbike."
