THE manager of Pye Corner in Chepstow says she is furious that Monmouthshire council have approved plans for a food and drinks kiosk to be built just a few hundred yards away from her premises, after she only recently secured a franchise with a national coffee house.

Alison Beasley, who run the coffee house, part of The White Lion/Smirnoff Bar in Welsh Street, says she now fears she will lose her contract with Coffee Republic as part of securing the franchise meant detailing which other coffee suppliers were in close proximity as well committing to sell a certain amount of coffee per week.

She said: "It feels like one thing after another. I can't believe the council allowed this when there are already so many cafes and restaurants in the town. Everyone is struggling and trying to keep their heads above water. I've been trying so hard with the coffee house and we've started doing really well, but having this kiosk only a few hundred yards away is definitely going to impact on us. I'm not just angry about it - I'm gutted."

Ms Beasley is not the only one angry about the approval of the kiosk which will be located in Bank Street, selling hot and cold food and drinks and will have a toilet and outdoor seating area. Chepstow Town Council strongly opposed the plans, as did Chepstow Society, both arguing it would be an eyesore in what is a conservation area, as well as causing traffic, litter, and noise problems. Other traders and local residents have also voiced their dismay, with Kreation's Cafe owner, Maxine Jones saying: "What on earth do we need more cafes for? I am disappointed with the council's decision."

MCC's Head of Planning George Ashworth said: "We have looked at this very very thoroughly and carried out a site inspection.

"As it's in the central part of town, we cannot take into account competition issues as that has to be expected in a central location."
