A fancy dress jelly welly walk across the Severn Bridge was held on Sunday (July 24) in memory of a Chepstow couple's tragic tot who died at just 10 days old.

Patrick and Kirsty Thompson's baby daughter, Lacey-Esme, was born with Down's Syndrome, a hole in the heart, and a reversed stomach. Following her delivery on July 26 2009, she suffered complications that lead to her developing asphyxia after she was unable to swallow her milk properly.

The married couple, who are childhood sweethearts and both originally from Chepstow, were living in Maidstone, Kent, as part of Patrick's career in the Royal Engineers, when their much anticipated first child was born.

Sadly, the couple was left devastated when just 10 days after Lacey-Esme's birth, her condition deteriorated and she died on August 5.

Her funeral was held in St Mary's Church in Chepstow and she was buried in Chepstow Cemetery.

Two years on, the couple, who now have a healthy 11-month-old son, Jaiden, have made a vow to mark Lacey-Esme's birthday each year with a charity fundraiser in aid of Downs charities and the hospital unit in London that cared for her.

The jelly walk on July 24, saw scores of walkers dressed in fancy dress and wellies filled with jelly travel across the Severn Bridge, and later a raffle and cake sale was held in the Two Brewers in Bulwark.

Kirsty said: "We raised a total of £1,018.

"We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who came on the walk and gave money for the charities, to all the shops who donated raffle prizes and my mum Tanya for going around the shops. Plus the Two Brewers for letting us hold the raffle and cake sale there. But most of all to our beautiful daughter Lacey-Esme for being our inspiration."
