MORE than 40 volunteers from around the UK, Europe and Australia took part in restoration work on the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal in Cwmbran.

The two-week work camp in July focused on the restoration of a disused canal lock on the Ty Coch Flight in Llantarnam near Pentre Lane.

As part of a pilot scheme to develop volunteering and skills to help support the restoration and maintenance of the canal in Torfaen, participants received training in heritage restoration techniques such as the use of lime mortar and promoted their work at Cwmbran's Big Event.

Torfaen council leader cllr Bob Wellington, said: "The canal is a fantastic resource for local communities and visitors alike. Developing opportunities and training for volunteers will help realise the regeneration potential of the canal while protecting and enhancing its heritage, leisure opportunities and environment."

Now approaching its 200th anniversary, much of the canal in Torfaen has recently been designated as a conservation area. The council, in partnership with the Canals Trust, are currently developing regeneration proposals for the canal south of Cwmbran with support from the Heritage Lottery.
