A CWMBRAN man who spends his time helping out others is on the shortlist to be an Olympic torchbearer.

Kierran Spiers, 19, was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome and developmental coordination disorder at the age of 11 but has not let this stop him helping others.

This includes being a member of the Funky Dragons, the Assembly's children and young people forum, as well as volunteering to help youngsters tackling the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.

Mr Spiers, who was nominated by his mother Sian, is yet to find out about his achievement as he is currently in Serbia working for his explorer belt award with the Scouting movement which involves him travelling through Serbia completing surprise projects.

Mrs Spiers said: "I nominated him because he is always doing things for the community and I am so proud of him and what he has achieved."

Mr Spiers will now face a panel and will hear in December whether he is one of the 2,012 successful applicants out of the 28,000 people who have been shortlisted.
