A YOUNG Pontypool boy came to his mum's rescue when she broke her wrist in Pontypool Park at the weekend.

Luke Daniel, five, from Wainfelin was playing hide and seek with his mum, Katie, 32, on Saturday morning when she slipped while running around a tree to hide.

She felt her left wrist snap instantly as she put her hands out to break her fall.

She said: "The first thing Luke said when he saw me was "I found you mummy, now it's my turn to hide", but when I told him I was hurt he was absolutely amazing.

"He made me sit down on a bench and I couldn't even get my phone out of my pocket, so Luke got it out for me.

"I managed to call my husband Nathan to let him know what had happened. But when I got off the phone I thought I was going to pass out. I told Luke "If mummy goes to sleep you need to call daddy back".

"I wasn't in pain at first as I think shock set in, seeing my wrist all mangled, but once it did kick in, it felt worse than child-birth to me.

"Luke was so brave, he didn't panic. We were over by the tower clock and no one else was around. We managed to get to the leisure centre and Luke kept talking to me the whole way and was trying to make me laugh.

"He's so grown up for five. He's as good as gold."

Staff at Pontypool Active Living Centre insisted on calling an ambulance and Katie had to be sedated while her wrist was put back in place.

She said: "It ended up turning in to quite an eventful weekend. Luke went to a party in the afternoon while I was in hospital but as soon as he came home he asked me if there was anything he could do for me."

Luke's grandmother Lynne Daniel, 58, said: "We're all so proud of him."

Katie's family are all now rallying around her. She said: "My husband is pretty much having to do everything but Luke and his sister Emily, 11, are helping out."
