A PUBLIC meeting to discuss the new plans for the British will be held at the Old Age Pensioners Hall in Talywain on October 3 at 7pm.

The meeting was originally scheduled for September 12 but was postponed due to guest speakers having other commitments throughout September.

The Liason Committee meeting is expected to have Torfaen’s chief officer for planning and public protection Duncan Smith as a guest speaker.

Newplans could see the former colliery site redeveloped after lying derelict for 30 years.

The site, known as the British, at Talywain covers 1,300 acres and has seen many failed regeneration bids since mining and iron work ceased there.

Torfaen council is currently in negotiations with the Welsh Government and HSBC bank on a joint venture to secure the reclamation of the site.

The proposal would make the brownfield site safe by removing existing hazards including mines and voids, treating contaminated ground and solving drainage problems.

Back in 2009 a £100 million planned transformation of the site fell through after Spring, who proposed to develop 800 new homes, a small supermarket and leisure facilities went into administration.
