THE 175th anniversary of the Chartist movement will be commemorated in a play that will be performed in Newport and Monmouthshire.

The Forgotten is a musical theatre piece that draws on stories, songs and poetry from the characters and communities that played a crucial part in democracy for the region during the Chartist period.

The play presents factual events about the Chartist Uprising in 1839, drawing parallels between the problems of the mid-19th century and today.

Music for the production was composed by Justin Nicholls, the libretto is from the playwright Patrick Jone, who co-wrote the piece with theatre director and writer Vanessa Dodd and the director is Chris Durnall.

A professional and community cast is supported by the Singing Club under Chepstow singer Karl Daymond.

The play will be performed at Llandogo Village Hall at 7.30pm on November 22, The Drill Hall, Chepstow at 7.30pm on November 27, The Savoy Theatre, Monmouth at 7.30pm on December 5 and at the Riverfront Theatre at 7.30pm on November 19 and at 2pm on November 20. Tickets are from the Box Office of each theatre.

The production is supported by Newport’s Community Arts Development Fund and The Arts Council of Wales.
