THE Welsh Conservatives have pledged to improve support for people with autism in Wales as part of their manifesto for May’s Assembly election.
It is estimated autism affects one in 100 people in Wales, but, unlike in England, there is not currently any legislation guaranteeing their right to support.
The party’s shadow communities minister and AM for North Wales Mark Isherwood said the plans would help people with the condition as well as increasing awareness and understanding of it.
"By ensuring councils and health boards are required to take necessary action to offer support and by placing a focus on improving understanding of this condition Wales can lead the way in providing effective, consistent services for those affected by autism," he said.
Welsh Conservative leader Andrew RT Davies said: "Only 15 per cent of people with autism are in full-time work and it is clear there needs to be more support for those on the autism spectrum and their families in Wales.”
