A CAMPAIGN calling for improved access at Abergavenny railway station has gained council support.

Town councillors unanimously passed a motion on Wednesday evening in support of the Abergavenny Rail Access Campaign which calls for a new bridge with pedestrian lifts at the station to give full access to both platforms for everyone.

The motion, put forward by Cllr Martyn Groucutt, said the town council believes it is a “disgrace” that people with a physical disability, parents with young children in pushchairs, the elderly or passengers with heavy luggage do not have full access to the platforms.

An online petition has been signed by more than 700 people to date.

Network Rail said the Department of Transport has a fund, known as Access for All, which is used to make improvements.

The fund for the period 2014-2019 is fully allocated, but new funding may be made available from funders.
