PUPILS from Chepstow's The Dell Primary School enjoyed more chess success at the weekend at the Welsh Girl’s Chess Championships.
Fay Russell came first in the under eights category while Anna Boyle was joint first in the under nines section.
Madeleine Smith came second in the under 10s category. Anna and Madeleine are well known on the Welsh junior chess circuit and the Argus previously reported how Anna competed in the World Youth Chess Championships in South Africa last year.
At only seven years of age, this is Fay’s biggest win in her first chess tournament.
Her mum Tanya Sutton, said: “The story of The Dell’s success in chess is almost entirely down to one parent’s dedication and enthusiasm, coupled with the support of the head. That parent is Richard Stevenson and we are very grateful to him.”
Madeleine Smith’s mother Julia said: “It is great that the girls are doing so well at The Dell. We are proud of her achievement.”
Steve King, headmaster at The Dell, said: “What a great day for The Dell, a huge day for the school. We are are incredibly proud of their achievements.
Fay is in the infant department phase two and now she is a national champion.”
