A SHOP owner has said he will not close despite being broken into for the second time in under six weeks.

The Pontnewydd News, located on Commercial Street in Pontnewydd was broken into on Sunday morning and a large number of cigarettes were taken.

The store was previously targeted on October 24 when £700 worth of cigarettes was taken.

Michael Stewart, the owner of the store, said: “Cigarettes were taken again, they went straight for them. I’ve not had time to look at exactly was taken.

“There were two men involved and they were caught on CCTV.”

Mr Stewart said he will not be closing the shop as a result of the robbery, but that it has put more pressure on him during an already busy period.

He said: “It makes feel a bit ill if I’m honest. With the Christmas period the post office is quite busy and there’s an awful lot to do.

"This adds more pressure on me.”

The 43-year-old, who has owned the shop for six years, added that following the robbery the alarms at the shop had to be reset and he had to wait at the shop yesterday for the front door of the shop to be repaired.

He previously had to pay for a special locksmith to come and fix the door after the October robbery.

A Commercial Street resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "My partner and I woke up at about 5am hearing banging and running about downstairs. We knew immediately they’d been broken into again and my partner called 999.

“The police arrived quickly but whoever it was had already gone.”

Police are currently examining the CCTV footage that was captured during the incident.

A Gwent Police spokesman said: “We received a call at 5am on December 3 about a commercial break-in.

"There was a forced entry and cigarettes were taken. No arrests have been made but there are further enquiries being made.”

Anyone with any information about the incident should call 101 quoting log 118 03/12/17 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
