A BLAENAVON woman accused of affray in an incident involving a wheelchair-bound cancer patient at her home has said she ‘has nothing to hide.’

Rachael Warren, aged 52, of Market Street, Blaenavon, denies a charge of affray relating to an incident involving her son Ashley Beacham, at the home of Sharon Gwillym, 50, on March 1.

Beacham, aged 21, of Duke Street, Blaenavon, denies a charge of affray and making a threat to kill at an address at Riverside Drive in Blaenavon.

A third defendant, a teenager who cannot be named for legal reasons, also denies an affray charge.

Warren, a former carer, today gave evidence at Newport Crown Court and told the court that she ‘didn’t do it’ in response to the accusation that she is in the ‘habit of fighting her son’s battles.’

During questioning by the prosecution and the three defence counsel, the court heard how Warren willingly took part in police interviews and agreed to participate in an identification parade.

“I wasn’t worried, I have nothing to hide,” she said.

Warren told the court how she had been with her son Ashley’s girlfriend Rebecca Johnson, who is expecting his child, that afternoon and evening where they visited their friend Sue Hill along with Beacham and the third defendant.

She said she then visited another friend who lives at Riverside and it was while outside his house they saw the police but she said she ‘didn’t take any notice.’

She said she was; ‘not aware of the difficulties between Nadine and her son at that time.’ When prosecution said; “you were protecting him [Beacham], weren’t you ?

“If someone hurt him you would hurt them, wouldn’t you?’ To which she replied; ‘no.’ Rebecca Johnson, Beacham’s girlfriend also gave evidence which backed up Warrens account of the day, stating she was visited by Warren while she was babysitting and they went to their friend Sue Hill’s house where they met the other defendants.

Last week Beacham, giving evidence at Newport Crown Court, told the court the allegations are “a lie”.

The court heard how Beacham, had received sexual messages online from another woman, Nadine Gwillym, the evening before the alleged offence took place.

The prosecution has suggested that after Beacham's girlfriend discovered the messages, Beacham went round to Ms Gwillym's house to cause trouble and "to show loyalty" to his girlfriend.

Beacham said this was not true.

When asked by Judge Daniel Wynn Morgan whether it was true that Beacham went round and “terrorised” Nadine Gwillym, 21, and her mother, Sharon Gwillym, Beacham said it was not.

Last week the court also heard evidence from 50-year-old cancer patient Sharon Gwillym who alleges Beacham threatened to kill her.

The court heard how Beacham turned up to Ms Gwillym’s house at around 4.45pm with his mother, Rachael Warren, and the younger defendant.

Warren allegedly banged on Nadine Gwillym’s bedroom window and when Sharon Gwillym answered the door. Warren grabbed her left arm, dragged her into her living room and pushed her against the wall.

The court heard how Beacham and the third defendant followed through the window, which was ajar. Beacham, who is 6ft 5in, then grabbed Mrs Gwillym by her collar and pulled her face towards him.

He raised a metal chair in the air and allegedly screamed, "If you [Warren] don’t smash her, I will". Speaking about the Gwillyms, he then threatened to “kill the lot of you”.
