CWMBRAN parents laid their baby boy to rest today after he tragically died at five-weeks-old.

The funeral of baby Mason Francis Proctor took place at St David's R.C Church in Pontnewydd in which more than 80 people attended. Mourners wore items in baby blue in memory of Mason, the son of Kyla and Lewis.

Baby Mason was admitted to the Royal Gwent Hospital with breathing problems on August 28.

Doctors brought him back to consciousness after he stopped breathing but despite their best efforts he suffered brain damage after being unconscious for 20 minutes. He received further treatment, at the Noah’s Ark Children's Hospital in Cardiff but later that day his parents had to make the heartbreaking decision to turn the life support machine off.

A post-mortem later discovered that an inflamed tumour around his heart had stopped him breathing.

The service began with the song 'In the Arms of an Angel' before canon John Griffiths, who led the service, read a passage from the Gospel of Matthew. He said God had saved a special place in his kingdom for Mason.

He said: "Kyla, Lewis, your family and the community of our lady St David's offer you our prayers and sympathy. Your many friends and family are here today to give you strength and comfort.

"We pray for you and baby Mason. All your friends are here to console you and give you strength."

Mourners sang the hymn 'All Things Bright and Beautiful' to bring the service to a close. Friends and family raised more than £700 to cover the funeral and wake costs after hearing about the tragic death of Mason.

A committal at Llwyncelyn Cemetery followed the service. First time mum Ms Proctor, 20, thanked everyone for their donations towards organising the funeral and wanted everyone to wear baby blue as it was Mason's favourite colour.
