A WELSH rugby union legend was the guest of honour a special night organised by a Torfaen charity, which raised over £1,000.

Stephen Jones, who is second on the list for appearances for Wales and also for points scored, attended the event in support of Age Connects Torfaen.

One hundred people from the area came out for ‘An Evening with Stephen Jones’, which was held at the Widdershins Centre in Sebastopol at the start of the month.

The former fly-half, who has 104 Welsh caps and six for the British and Irish Lions, spoke to the group about his career – both on the field and away from it.

One of the visitors to the evening, who nearly shares his name with the ex-international, was delighted to meet one of his sporting heroes.

Age Connects Torfaen is one of six independently constituted organisations in Wales which aims to enhance the quality of life in our community by providing safe, cost effective, quality and reliable services.

The charity serves to provide information, activities and independence to older people in the local community who are experiencing poverty, loneliness and isolation and has been in operation for three decades.

Shane Jones tweeted: “I met another true idol to Welsh rugby @StephenMJones10 had an amazing night thanks to @ageconnectstorf once again.”

The night helped to raise more than £1,000 for the charity, which will allow Age Connects Torfaen to continue its work in helping the older generation.

Emma Wootten, age development co-ordinator at Age Connects Torfaen, said: “We would like to thank all of our supporters for making the evening a roaring success.

“It means that we can continue to provide services, care and support for older people in our local community.”

After Mr Jones has finished his talk, guests were able to participate in a raffle and an auction while enjoying a hog roast.
