GWENT Police has welcomed 20 new recruits into the force.

The ceremony, which took place at the Christchurch Centre in Newport, marks the completion of the officers initial 15-week training course, which teaches and develops the skills required to be a police officer.

The officers will now take up front-line policing roles in communities throughout Gwent, whilst undertaking another two years of on-the-job training.

The ceremony is a day of proud celebration for the officers and their families, many of whom have been focussed on this moment for many years.

PC Ceri Parker said: “I pass out after 15 weeks training. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in training and can now count my 19 classmates as friends for life.

“I am looking forward to the challenges I face on the streets of Gwent and promise to serve the public to the best of my ability.”

PC Tasmin O’Connell said: “I am thrilled to be joining Gwent Police as a Constable in Torfaen.

“The training has been a great experience and I am now ready to serve the community with the rest of my colleagues.”

PC Aaron Stevenson added: “It has been worth it all to represent the diverse communities of Gwent.

“Today is a day I have envisioned since the age of three, having worn my first ever police outfit, watching Mr Benn on TV with my Nan.

“One of the last words spoken by my Nan was that I would become an officer. Today has been for my Nan, my family and all those who have shown faith in my chosen career path.”

PC Dean Wong said: “It’s taken over three and a half years but I’m finally here.

“It’s a dream come true and I cannot believe it’s now here. I’m feeling nervous but very excited to get started in my new career. I’m so happy to be able to soak it all in and enjoy this moment.”

PC Martyn Pugh was the winner of the Mark Kendall Police Mutual Assurance book prize, for consistently achieving the highest standards of appearance, commitment and achievement throughout the course.

He said: “The training has been amazing and I am now much more confident than when I started 15 weeks ago.

“Gwent is an amazing Force to join - having started as a Cadet, right through to now becoming a PC, the Force has always been one to be proud of.

“I look forward to seeing how we all progress, many will go on to promotion I’m sure and I’m glad to be joining at such an exciting time.”
