IT WAS a great start to the Gwent Amateur Cup for Cwmbran Town on Saturday with an 11-0 victory against visitors Portskewett and Sudbrook.

The Crows were 6-0 up by half time with a hat-trick from Luke Thomas, two from left-back Ben Evans and another from midfielder James Vernall.

In the second half Cwmbran skipper Sean Matthews limped off with an ankle injury which club secretary Ian Greaney said they hoped was nothing serious.

Substitute Saffian Skupinski scored four goals in the last 25 minutes, with another goal by Mark Haynes.

Greaney added: “Despite Portskewett and Sudbrook being a few divisions below ourselves, they were a battling side. But we were the superior side on the day and we’re looking forward to the next round.”

Cwmbran Town play Pill at home on Saturday in Division One of the Gwent County League. The sides met earlier in the season when The Crows beat Pill on penalties.

Greaney said Pill are a strong, physical side and believes it will be hard-fought game.

Kick off is 2pm at Cwmbran Stadium.
