CRICKET: Usk lose top spot

12:11pm Tuesday 1st July 2014

RAIN wiped out the majority of matches in the Thomas, Carroll Glamorgan and Monmouthshire Cricket League but the Division One games that were played threw up some surprise results.

New leaders Usk's tenure at the top lasted just a week as they lost at home to Blackwood in a match reduced to 44 overs.

Batting first, Usk reached a useful 211-7 with Ollie James making 78, Ian Clayton 32 and Sam Morris 30. Kyle Tudge returned 9-1-30-3 for Blackwood and Will Ford 6-0-34-3.

More rain at tea gave Blackwood a revised Duckworth Lewis target of 187 and they chased that down in 32-4 overs with three wickets in hand.

Callum Herring scored 74 and Dan Wilkinson 50 while James had 8-1-43-3 for Usk.

That meant a return to the top for Chepstow whose match was cancelled and Sudbrook moved up into second place despite losing at Avenue Road where Abergavenny broke their season's duck.

The game was reduced to 42 overs and Abergavenny were put in and reached 175-8 with Asim Gillani 44 not out, Mohammed Ali Bukari 42 and Mo Salman 22. John Lewis took 4-19 off nine overs for Sudbrook.

Captain Ross Lewis top scored with 27 and Matt Jones made 24 but Sudbrook slipped to 111 all out as Andy Clarke took 5-28 and Gillani 3-16.
