TOM Turner scored possibly his most important goal of the season to keep Underwood SC’s promotion bid alive on Saturday.

Turner struck soon after half time to take all three points to ensure the team’s title hopes are likely to go down to the final match of the season.

Games between these two equally-matched sides are always tight and although only one goal settled it, there was no shortage of chances in one of the best games of the season.

The first half saw both teams create and miss chances to score and when Underwood striker Josh Downing limped out of the action with a pulled hamstring injury, the pendulum swung towards Mathern.

They had chances but they missed suspended leading scorer Wayne Duffield.

Harry Ward led the line but had little joy against Underwood’s skipper Jamie Green who rarely put a foot wrong throughout.

Mathern were also without influential midfielder Ryan Guscott who was drafted into the Gwent County League side at Ynysddu.

Despite the losses, the home side performed well and manager Lee Baker said he was proud of the way his men played.

“It was a good game to watch with both teams trying to play football,” he said.

“We battled hard as a team and made it hard for Underwood to play. We had chances in the game but we couldn’t convert them or their keeper Will Hobbs made some good saves.

“We pushed for the equaliser right to the end but just couldn't break down a solid Underwood defence but we have made another good account of ourselves against the best in the league.”

The goal came from a free-kick out on Mathern’s right flank and Turner was at the far post to prod the ball home despite home keeper Jason Johnson’s efforts to scoop the ball clear.

Underwood manager Sean Johnson was delighted the hard-earned three points keep his side’s title and promotion hopes alive.

“We knew Mathern would be a tough team to break down, given we had lost to them in the cup and had a close game against them in the league,” he said.

“We defended well all game and never really looked like conceding.

“Jamie Green led by example putting his body on the line and winning everything in the air.

“Mathern were dogged and pushed us right to the end but I think we were worthy of the win.

“We knew dropping points would hand Sudbrook CC the title, so it’s a big win for us and gives us a boost going into the tough final few games.

“We still believe we have what it takes to win promotion.”

The manager also revealed plans for the Benevolent Cup semi-final between Underwood’s A and B teams on March 28.

“We have made the semi into a community event with lots of things going on including a barbecue, music, mini fair, cheerleaders, fire breathers, youth teams as mascots and lots more,” he added.
