Severn Tunnel 6 Tredegar 1

FOUR second-half goals gave Severn Tunnel Ladies a welcome three points at Rogiet on Sunday, writes Bob Cypher.

Although the winning margin was wide, Tunnel were not flattered and could have done their goal difference a lot of good against a well-drilled but unimaginative Tredegar.

Nat Rostron gave Tunnel the lead after a period of pressure from the first whistle with the visitors penned in their own half for the first 20 minutes.

When Tredegar equalised soon after going behind, it was hard to see how Tunnel had let a lead slip.

But Sarah Bailey took advantage after Carys Soper laid the ball back to her, curling the ball into the top right-hand corner of the net.

After half time, Tredegar threatened little but with Taylor Fitzgerald raiding down the visitors’ left flank and Mikaela Roberts doing the same on the right, Tredegar’s defence suddenly developed gaps for Taran Fitzgerald and Shauna Poultney to move into.

Roberts was felled in the penalty area and Taylor smashed the spotkick home to make it 3-1.

Taylor then turned provider laying on a pass for her sister Taran to make it four and Chelsey Flenley added the fifth with the best goal of the day, lobbing the Tredegar keeper from 25 yards.

Another good move saw Carys Soper beat the offside trap before scoring the sixth.

Tunnel’s manager Sian Elizabeth Rees was happy with the way her team came back after their opponents equalised.

“It took a while for us to settle into the game but we took control and in the second half we converted more chances,” she said later.

“I was pleased with our excellent defending and good links through midfield to good attack play, paid dividends.”

Severn Tunnel are at home again next Sunday when Caerphilly Castle are the visitors, kick-off 2pm.
