ABERGAVENNY Town secured a vital three points on Friday night following a dramatic 1-0 victory over Llanelli Town at the Pen-y-Pound Stadium in the JD Cymru South, writes Stuart Townsend.
The game was heading towards a goalless draw until sub Owen Taylor, returning after dislocating his shoulder four weeks ago, cut in from the right in the 92nd minute and squeezed his low shot inside the near post to spark joyous scenes among home players and supporters.
Abergavenny provided a solid defensive performance, particularly during the second half, as they withstood periods of pressure from the visitors.
They have two matches remaining, away at Carmarthen Town and home to Briton Ferry in a bid to preserve their tier two status.
On Sunday, Abergavenny’s women’s team crashed out of the Genero Adran Plate, losing 3-0 at Aberystwyth Town.
On a different note, hats off to the prankster who posted a picture of Welsh football legend Dean Saunders posing with a Caldicot Town shirt under a story about him joining the club – on April 1!
- Honours were shared in the annual football match between Monmouth School for Boys’ 1st XI and the Old Monmothians recently. After going a goal down thanks to Noah Rice’s header the Old Boys struck twice through Seb Lawson and Sam Swingwood to take the lead but the 1st XI hit back through Luke Rees to draw level and missed a late penalty to clinch victory.
