Gwent FA Amateur Cup, Round One
Sudbrook CC 7 Wattsville 2
SUDBROOK swept aside Division Two leaders Wattsville 7-2 to set up a second round home tie against Newport’s Riverside Rovers, writes Bob Cypher.
The cup match was a trial run for this Saturday’s league encounter at Mill Lane and now takes on extra significance as Wattsville head the table by just three points.
Sudbrook are fifth, seven points behind the leaders, but if they can repeat the weekend’s result, it will give their own promotion hopes a massive boost.
Sudbrook started positively with Jason Thorn and man-of-the-match Oli Mottram running the show.
“We took the game to Wattsville from the first whistle,” said David Lloyd, who was in charge of the team while manager Daryl Cann was away.
“Wattsville couldn't cope with the pace and movement of Jason and Oli.
“Tom Turner and Jason scored twice to put us 4-1 up at the break.
“We took our feet off the gas at the start of the second half and they scored their second but after that we totally outplayed them.
“Keenan Perrett added two goals including a penalty and Richie Lloyd scored our seventh.
“This Saturday’s league match will probably be a lot different but this win will give us confidence and momentum after a couple of disappointing results in the league.”
