CHEPSTOW Boxing Club is celebrating after one of its members was picked to represent Wales, writes Bob Cypher.

The club’s head coach Steve Woods was notified at the weekend that Pat Mullane will travel with the Welsh Junior squad to take on hosts Scotland this Friday.

“It’s fantastic news,” the elated coach said.

“I know Pat will give it his all –it’s great news for him and for Chepstow Boxing Club.”

Mullane and his team-mates will box in the semi-finals on Saturday and the finals on Sunday in the Great Britain Junior Championships.

There was further good news for the club when 11-year-old Cai Dean won his first bout in Towy last week, earning a unanimous verdict against a lad from a Swansea club.

Club-mate Elijah Carroll put a narrow defeat on the same bill behind him when he beat a very strong boxer at another show in Gelligaer.

Elijah’s opponent was very strong and Elijah tried fighting him at first,” Woods said.

“But he followed instructions and stuck to his boxing and won with a unanimous verdict.

“That will probably be Elijah’s last bout before the autumn when he will box in the Welsh Novice Championships.

“Next week we have Gussy Cash, Cai Dean and Jerry Cash on a show in Gelligaer,” Woods added.
