DRAGONS Premiership Select XV chief James Chapron has mixed youth with experience for his side’s British & Irish Cup clash with Yorkshire Carnegie in Huddersfield tomorrow (kick-off 1.30pm).

Head coach Chapron has a host of new faces available for the Dragons’ third group game of the competition, including debutants Will Griffiths and Callum Morris.

While Morris starts at scrum-half alongside fly-half Dorian Jones, hooker Griffiths takes his place on the bench with Ellis Shipp in Chapron’s XV.

The back three sees full-back Joe Goodchild named alongside wingers Rio Dyer and Barney Nightingale.

The centre partnership has one change to it from the defeat to Jersey, as Newport’s Chay Smith is joined by Connor Edwards.

In the front row, tighthead Garin Harris packs down alongside experienced Dragons loosehead Phil Price and youngster Shipp.

The second row sees RGC 1404’s Henri Williams get the nod with Cross Keys lock Josh Skinner.

Flanker Lennon Greggains has been given the responsibility of captaining the side – Taine Basham and Bargoed’s number eight Ieuan Jones make up the back row.

“With the amount of injuries that both the Dragons and our Premiership sides currently have, it gives us an opportunity to play the likes of our 17-year-old hooker Will Griffiths who will make his debut for the side off the bench,” said Chapron.

“He’s a very good player and it’s a good opportunity for him to come off the bench at this level and we will see what he can do with a bit of pressure.

“We also have a young nine, Callum Morris, who we recently signed from Welsh Exiles, this will be his first game at this level as well.”

He continued: “The British & Irish Cup is a really good opportunity to see where our boys are at, and to be able to give them some sort of experience and bite to their training which they don’t always get because they play for their clubs.

“Last year’s squad contained the likes of Leon Brown, James Benjamin, Joe Davies and Harrison Keddie.

“They were all British & Irish Cup players, so that probably shows the value of the competition and it gave opportunities for guys like Charlie Davies and Jack Dixon who were coming back from injuries to reintegrate at a decent level.

“The value of the competition is not always in the results.”
