A MUM’s campaign to raise £40,000 to pay for an operation that will change her daughter’s life has raised more than £30,000.
Helen Morgan, 30, of Cornwallis Way, Monmouth, has been raising the cash for her six-year-old daughter Chase Vaughan, who suffers a debilitating nerve-muscle condition known as spastic diplegia cerebral palsy, which means she walks on her toes, has stiffness in her legs and poor balance and co-ordination.
Miss Morgan says an operation to save her from relying on a wheelchair, is not available on the NHS.
She fears her mobility could deteriorate if she does not undergo a procedure known as selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) to help avoid further muscle deterioration and stiffness.
The procedure uses a technique developed in St Louis, USA, and involves making an incision in the spine to divide nerve roots that contribute to the spasticity.
Fundraising events that have helped raise £31,775.51 include an auction by Monmouth RFC, a Boxing Day charity football match and a 24-hour pool and darts marathon.
Miss Morgan said the support she and Chase have received from the community has been amazing.
“To have raised three-quarters of the money we need after only seven months of fundraising is brilliant,” she added.
“Thank you to everyone that has helped to get us here.”
