FROM the Archive this week features a photograph taken in a Holton Road photography studio based at 61.
In 1897 Mr J. Bell, of Frome, Somerset, opened a photography studio at 61, Holton Road, Barry.
It boasted of an improved plan and fitted with the best apparatus and lenses.
The newspapers at the time commented that Barry was a progressing town with the opening of a first-class studio with window displays of magnificent specimens of art photography.
In 1901, the business was taken over by Charles Nesbitt following the death of Mr Bell.
This photo of a Barry family was probably taken around the same time as the backing card refers to the late J. Bell.
The photo taken in the studio at 61 Holton Road, is well staged with a painted backdrop and everyone on their best clothes.
The identities of the subjects, but maybe someone knows their family members from years gone by?
The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the photograph and information.
If you have an old Barry photograph you would like to see included, with information about what it depicts, email sha@barryanddistrictnews.co.uk
