TORFAEN Museum has many photographs and paintings of the Church in its collections and also one of its former stained glass windows, donated and dedicated to the former mayor and mayoress of Torfaen, G Ivor and Flo Davies.

A recently donated album of photographs show the interior of the Church at Pontnewynydd and several show the altar reredos, the pulpit and the font.

These were made using plaster, marble and Penarth alabaster and have been recently researched and written about by author Michael Statham in his book on the Penarth alabaster industry.

When Mr Statham sent photographs of the St Luke’s reredos, altar and font to a fellow author, Julian Orbach, he identified the three items as now in St John’s RC Church in Trowbridge, Wiltshire.

In their new home, they are very much similar although the reredos is now the front of the altar and the pulpit has been cut down.

It is nice to know the items were not broken up but still in use after St Luke’s Church is long gone.

The former site of St Luke’s Church is now a cul-de-sac of houses.

Nostalgia is provided by Torfaen Museum.
