THE leader of Monmouthshire council has reaffirmed that the county is ready to support refugees fleeing Ukraine.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, and now the main advance of troops is moving towards the capital Kyiv.

The invasion has sparked a humanitarian crisis on Ukraine’s borders, with reports of large crowds at crossings with Poland, Moldova, and Hungary.

Among those fleeing are six-year-old Miroslava, and Lesia – the sister and step-mother of Cwmbran woman Lisa White – who fled Kyiv when Russian troops invaded the country last Thursday.

Leader of Monmouthshire council, Councillor Richard John said: “Events taking place in Ukraine are something we had hoped never to see in our lifetime.

“Europe was never meant to see unprovoked aggression again, following the wars of the last century.

“We stand with Ukraine and recognise the many Russians ashamed of their Government.

“We are ready to support those fleeing the conflict, and will play our part in any scheme that comes into place to assist refugees.”
