NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn has named a settled side in the final push for promotion but has several selection headaches for Wembley.

The adage of not changing a winning team doesn't apply for the League Two play-off final against Morecambe.

The Exiles celebrated wildly at Forest Green Rovers on Sunday after Nicky Maynard's last-gasp goal that made it a 4-3 loss and 5-4 triumph on aggregate.

The performance, and especially the start to the game at the New Lawn, leaves Flynn with plenty to ponder.

Here are the main selection dilemmas facing the manager and his coaching staff for the clash with the in-form Shrimps…

CRUCIAL: Tom King has been excellent since returning to the starting line-up but was at fault for Aaron Collins goal

KING or TOWNSEND?

The first decision is the man at the very top of the teamsheet.

For most of the campaign that was Nick Townsend, whose fine form earned a two-year contract.

However, a costly mistake in the 1-0 loss to Cambridge United led to Flynn, not doubt after mulling it over with goalkeeping coach James Hollman, making a change.

King rewarded that call with a crucial penalty save against Southend and big block against Forest Green Rovers in the first leg.

But the Wales squad man should have done better when Aaron Collins made it 2-0 at the New Lawn then was put off by (the offside) Ebou Adams when a wicked Nicky Cadden free-kick went straight in.

It would be harsh on King to drop back to the bench but Flynn hasn't been shy of a change between the sticks over the course of the campaign.

BACK THREE

Write Mickey Demetriou in – the stalwart has been immense on the left of the three, and also when County have gone with a four.

It would be a shock if Liam Shephard was not on the right after moving from wing-back for the run-in, although Priestley Farquharson provides a more physical option after recovering from injury.

The big dilemma is the man in the middle – Scot Bennett or Matty Dolan, with the player that misses out being a contender for midfield.

Bennett was superb in the run-in but play-making Dolan was arguably the player of the season until suffering a concussion against Carlisle.

INFLUENTIAL: Joss Labadie is likely to return to the starting line-up

MIDFIELD

Josh Sheehan will pull the strings while captain Joss Labadie, who came off the bench at Forest Green after recovering from a cut knee, is surely going to return to the XI to be an influence at both ends.

That leaves Bennett/Dolan and Anthony Hartigan, who would be suited to the Wembley surface with his passing and pressing.

Flynn likes the balance of the Sheehan, Bennett, Labadie trio but hard-working Hartigan has been a hit since forcing his way into the team.

Whoever misses out will still have a part to play off the bench.

CONTENDER: Nicky Maynard is pushing for a start up front

UP FRONT

It has been Lewis Collins and Padraig Amond for the last seven games and there is no reason to break up the energetic, selfless partnership now… other than goals.

Amond, County's best finisher every season since his 2017 arrival, is under pressure because of a 13-game drought.

Once again, it would be a surprise if there is a change as the partnership has worked but the substitutes have done well recently.

Ryan Taylor came on to see the game out against Southend and in the first game against Forest Green, while his terrific nod down when it was 3-0 at the New Lawn hasn't got the credit it deserved because of Kevin Ellison's finish.

The targetman, a promotion winner with Plymouth, is probably suited to adding physicality off the bench.

The bigger threat to Amond's spot arguably comes from Nicky Maynard, scorer of the late tie winner and whose movement has been much better than when he arrived short of match fitness.

It's a tight call for Flynn and like in midfield, the disappointed men will have big roles to play.
